Lesson 6 · 4 min
Safety, consent, and the exit ramp
Safety isn't the unromantic part of dating. It's the part that makes closeness possible.
Basics that are never rude to do: first meets in public, your own transportation, one friend knows where you are, no financial anything, no moving venues you didn't agree to.
Consent is ongoing and verbal-friendly. "Is this okay?" is not a mood killer, it's the thing that lets someone actually relax.
Watch for pressure disguised as affection: rushed intensity, guilt when you set a limit, testing your boundaries in small ways. Believe the pattern, not the apology.
And give people an exit ramp. Anyone who can leave easily can also stay honestly.
Do this, not that
Don't
"You don't trust me?" when someone keeps a boundary.
Do
"Makes total sense. Public place, and I'll see you there."
Why: Respecting a precaution without needing credit for it is one of the strongest signals of safety a person can send.
Don't
Pushing for a private location on a first meet.
Do
Suggesting a bar, café, or walk, and letting them pick.
Why: Letting the other person choose the setting hands them control, which is what makes a first meet feel good.
Tonight's rep
Write your two non-negotiables for a first meet. Send them casually next time, notice how the good ones respond.
Quick check
Someone gets irritated when you set a boundary. That's...
